Understated Elegance or a Tone-Deaf Choice? The 'Cloud Dancer' Shade Chosen as Pantone's 2026 Colour.

Hi there! I can't wait to learn what color will define 2026. What's the scoop?

Brace yourself, as every year for over two decades, Pantone announces a Color of the Year. This choice seeks to represent the current cultural mood—influencing everything from how we feel and fashion choices to home decor. 2025's color was the deep beige "a coffee-inspired shade," following the soft and warm "a delicate peach tone."

The new selection, in contrast, is even more puzzling. It is "a billowy white," labeled as a "billowy, balanced white."

Laurie Pressman, VP of the Pantone Color Institute, stated that it is "a pivotal neutral tone … enabling all colors to shine."

Well, Cloud Dancer sounds… seriously, white? Could they be trolling us? Can white truly be considered a real color?

Can you even define the shade of milk? A blank page? Even though people often think of white as a color, the entire spectrum is fundamentally a perception of light wavelengths. It's present in a set of colored pencils, so in everyday terms the answer is yes.

The question of whether Pantone is pulling our leg is harder to determine. The company states, Cloud Dancer combines easily with other colors, avoids sensory overload, makes a minimalist statement, and radiates subtle elegance.

The public reaction, on the other hand, has been less complimentary. Some commentators have suggested Pantone of being completely "Pantonedeaf." Style expert Mandy Lee described it as "a let-down." Critics have drawn parallels to coded promotion of problematic concepts seen in recent advertising.

Okay, one would hope they're cheerfully oblivious that now is a sensitive time to be explicitly championing whiteness... Anyway, how can a regular person not exactly adjacent to a runway incorporate this information in my world? My kitchen ceiling is my kitchen ceiling white, is that enough?

That definitely qualifies. The same goes for your white headphones, sink, or ceramic plate.

It's interesting you mention runways, since many this season's presentations have been exceptionally bright, featuring plant-based feathers on the catwalk.

White ensembles featured prominently, like always, in designer collections—from structured tops to tailored gowns. High-profile figures have also been spotted in crisp all-white ensembles at prestigious shows.

The good news is: you probably already have items in this "understated" chosen hue. In the words of Pressman, Cloud Dancer "represents a greener option for the eco-conscious," which essentially suggests skipping the requirement for fresh products at all.

AT LAST, a fashion trend for the truly minimalist. A fresh start, so to speak. A sanctuary of monochromatic zen within the noise. Okay, I'm on board. Will you be creating a all-white theme for your wardrobe?

Not a chance. Have you ever tried to get out tomato sauce stains from a light garment? I'm not seeking more laundry disasters in 2026.

I do have a pair of once-white comfort shoes, and such staples are always in vogue.
