The bodies of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been found inside freezing appliances in an residence in the western part of Austria.

The victims, a Syrian woman and her child, who had been unaccounted for for several months, were detected on the end of last week. The freezers were hidden behind a false wall in the flat, located in the Innsbruck area.

Two individuals, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were arrested in June. The elder brother, a colleague of the Syrian woman, informed law enforcement last week that there had been an accident—but rejected homicide.

Informing reporters previously, a representative for the legal authorities announced the brothers were being held on "strong suspicion of intentional killing".

Personal details of those implicated have not been released by law enforcement, in following national regulations.

Their going missing was first reported by the female victim's relative, who lives in Germany, on 25 July 2024.

Authorities said the male associate informed them at the time she had gone on an long journey with her child to visit her parents in Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then discovered to be utilized in foreign locations repeatedly.

Yet when investigators searched the mother's apartment, her smartphone was discovered.

A witness also stated listening to a disturbing sound in the apartment, and screams of "mum" on the occasion the pair were presumed to have gone missing.

A broader police investigation was started, with authorities finding multiple communications originating from the victim's mobile—such as a resignation letter to her company and messages to the 55-year-old suspect.

Law enforcement stated a significant cash transfer was also sent to the suspect.

The head of the State Criminal Police Office informed media representatives on that day that a storage facility had been secured before the vanishing and a freezing appliance had been placed there.

The two suspects took out the appliance from the storage space on the very day the woman and her child went missing, Tersch stated. And a shortly afterward, they acquired another freezer.

Authorities state they believe this indicates the demise were planned in advance.

"How they died could not be determined due to the condition of the remains," Tersch said.

A legal representative—representing the state—noted the specific order of occurrences is not yet known, but the remains were expertly concealed and were not found during a earlier inspection.

While the men were arrested in the summer, it was only on the 12th of November that the elder brother admitted to an occurrence and to hiding the bodies. He rejects any plan to cause death, investigators said.

In a related development, his brother admitted to a attempt to hide evidence but disputed knowledge of a homicide.

The two suspects are presently in pre-trial detention in detention centers in Innsbruck and Salzburg, around 117 miles (189km) apart.

Through a combined announcement, Austria's Minister for Women and Justice Minister declared the "reported homicide of mother and child... represents the swift and cruel conclusion of two human lives and uncovers a cruel system".

"Women and girls are being killed due to the sole reason that they are women and girls," they went on to say.

"Murders of women are a strongly established and widespread concern that we must combat firmly."
