Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he will make a decision about whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 elections are over.
"Absolutely, I would be lying if I denied it," Newsom commented when questioned about contemplating a presidential run following the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."
The governor's time in office as governor concludes in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. Yet, he cautioned that any determination is still years away.
"It's up to destiny," he added.
He has emerged as a notable opponent of the current federal leadership, employing his digital presence and championing a initiative that would boost the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This strategy has made him a target from critics.
The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a weekend interview on Fox News. The secretary announced plans to pull taxpayer dollars from California and warned suspending the authority to grant CDLs.
"I intend to cut $160 million from California," Duffy declared, following a recently reported deadly accident in the state involving an non-citizen semi truck driver that caused fatalities and casualties.
His administration highlighted that the national authorities had approved the worker's status multiple times, which permitted him to obtain a CDL under federal law.
The transportation secretary had earlier announced he was withholding $40 million from California for failing to implement language proficiency rules for truck drivers.
"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," the governor's team responded in a recent statement countering the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than California. Data speaks for itself. The federal leadership misleads."
A recently conducted poll revealed that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters believed that the governor should run for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has increased to an average of a third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an mean of over 40% to 38.4%.
Earlier this year, Newsom stated while traveling several swing states that he had "no idea" about his intentions for 2028.
He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.
"The idea that a individual who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, remarkable," he said. "Who the hell knows? I await who steps forward in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that is the issue for the voters."
