The head of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, said the residence was under an removal notice due to debts accrued by the property owners.

Mediators had been sent to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers reached the location soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents triggered the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander the police commander told the media.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the detonation directly hit our officers,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also found at the site, the interior minister stated.

As stated by the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.

He was convinced the blast had happened on a floor above the entrance and stated to journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the blast, he revealed officers had “heard a whistle, presumably the gas canisters being opened”.
