Adult Swim's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.

In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, not long after, the network unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a serene talk show. During a period often defined by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Two-Season Greenlight

On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four key characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."

A President's Endorsement

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and advocated for its peculiarly charming appeal.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about observing this charming family go about their simple existence.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
